Palliation in Cancer Patient (Supportive care for Gastric Cancer Patient )-A way forward taken at Neotia Getwel Healthcare Centre
A patient was admitted at Neotia
Getwel Healthcare Centre who had obstruction in the stomach by a gallbladder
cancer which had spread to several parts of the body. The patient could not eat
anything due to that obstruction and was not a candidate for surgical
intervention as .A metal stent (SEMS) was placed through the stomach into the
duodenum to bypass the obstruction by Dr.Md.Nadeem Parvez, MD, DM, Consultant
Gastroenterologist at Neotia Getwel Healthcare Centre. After putting this metal
stent the patient gradually started feeding and that was a great relief to the
patient & the family. The patient was given palliative care which is a
supportive care given to patients who are suffering from life threatening
diseases like cancer to improve the quality of life. When a patient is
suffering from advanced cancer, providing palliative care is very important as
it helps one to live comfortably even when the disease cannot be cured.
Self-expandable metallic stents
(SEMS) are now used in the palliation of malignant gastric outlet obstruction
(GOOs) as they provide lower mortality and morbidity.
However metal stent placement
requires highly skilled endoscopist and are performed at very few centres
across the country .This antroduodenal stent was placed at Neotia Getwel
Healthcare Centre. Such highly skilled procedure will definitely help patients
suffering from gastrointestinal cancers in future. The patient made an
uneventful recovery.
The department of Gastroenterology at Neotia
Getwel Healthcare Centre is equipped to provide state-of-the art diagnostic and
therapeutic services and deliver world class tertiary care & cure to
patients suffering from disorder of gastro intestinal tract. The department
comprises of the most advanced facilities to carry out all major endoscopy and
radiology assisted procedure. The institute also runs a critical care unit
often required for the management of liver cirrhosis’s, chronic hepatitis and
pancreatitis. The department has also been a pioneer to introduce Argon Plasma
Treatment in the region to deliver advanced treatment facilities for
gastrointestinal
